Is it really that important to sleep on a chemical-free mattress?

You may be surprised to learn that a wide array of hazardous industrial chemicals are found in most of today's mattresses, including benzene, toluene, phosphorus, formaldehyde, vinyl, pentaBDE, antimony, PVC, phthalates, pesticides, polyurethane and chlorine. These chemicals can cause a variety of health problems including insomnia; irritation of skin, eyes, throat and lungs; allergies and multiple chemical sensitivities; and some are known carcinogens.

Since many of these chemicals off-gas into the air and we sleep in such close proximity to our mattresses, we are exposed to these toxins for a significant period of time every day. The body stores many of these substances in fatty tissue, including the brain, where they are suspected of contributing to chronic brain disorders that are becoming epidemic in the older generation.

Many researchers also believe that environmental toxins, especially those found in today's weather-sealed homes, play a significant role in the increase in childhood disorders such as ADD/ADHD, autism, asthma and cancer. And the toxic gases given off by baby mattresses have been implicated in SIDS/crib death.

What is natural latex / rubber?

There is a lot of confusion about natural latex/rubber products. Unfortunately, just as in other industries like food and cosmetics, "natural" can be used to describe any product that contains natural ingredients. Some mattress companies call blends that contain 60% synthetic latex "natural" because they contain some natural latex. Other companies claim they use "all natural latex" but they have not tested their imported rubber to see if it is truly natural and free of chemicals. Pure-Rest latex has been tested by Latexco, an independent lab, to be pure and chemical-free. Results are available on request.

Is it latex or is it rubber?

Most people refer to rubber mattresses using the term latex. Technically, latex is defined as the milky fluid that is produced by the cells of the rubber tree. It is treated using a process called vulcanization to create rubber. On our site we use these terms interchangeably.

Natural, Non-toxic, Environmentally Friendly
100% natural latex is resilient and naturally resistant to mold, mildew, bacteria and dust mites. Only air, natural soap and natural vulcanization (curing) agents are used in processing Pure-Rest's latex, tapped from the Hevea Brasiliensis—commonly known as a rubber tree—which grows on plantations in Southeast Asia. Unlike synthetic rubber made from petroleum, natural rubber is an excellent environmental choice. It's a renewable resource, there are no toxic substances or ozone-depleting agents used in manufacturing it, and rubber plantations help combat the greenhouse effect!

Pure Wool is Wonderful
The organically-grown wool used in Pure-Rest mattresses is washed with only water and vegetable-based soaps—no detergents, chemicals or chlorine bleach are used. It's processed without the use of oils or bonding agents, and retains 4-6% lanolin which protects the mattress from moisture, dust mites and bed bugs. With the exception of the vegan mattress, Pure-Rest mattresses meet or exceed the stringent 2005/2007 California and Federal flame retardancy standards...without the addition of flame retardant chemicals!

The Harmony 7" Deluxe natural latex mattress is made with a 100% pure natural Latex Green core, covered with European organic cotton fabric quilted to organically processed wool from organically raised sheep. The thick layer of wool provides natural flame resistance, and combined with thick organic cotton batting it makes the top more comfortable than manufacturers who use thinner batting to cut costs. The mattress conforms to your body's shape and minimizes pressure on your joints and back. For extra softness, a 2" natural latex topper or 3" wool-filled organic cotton topper may be added. ZIPPERED 7" LAYERED MATTRESS has two 3-inch layers in a zipped cover. You can customize the layers to your preferred firmness, and queen and king can have the bottom cores split side-to-side if two sleepers have different firmness preferences. We recommend a soft top layer soft and firm or XFirm bottom layers. The heavier a person is, the denser the core they should use.These mattresses feel a bit softer than the standard Harmony. BUDGET 6.5" LAYERED MATTRESS has one 6" layer of natural latex and a little less wool in the cover than the Zippered and Deluxe Harmony mattresses. The rubber in the Budget cores might have a minimal chemical content (as does most of the rubber used by our competitors), and the outer is sateen instead of fancy damask. All other details are the same. NO boric acid, NO silica, NO flame retardant fabrics, NO wool treatments.

HARMONY-VEGAN: The Harmony mattress is also available "vegan style" — six inches of natural latex covered with our organic cotton ticking and no wool. This style will feel a bit softer, as there is no topping. The Harmony-Vegan is only available with a doctor's note stating that wool is not recommended for the patient, and a note from the buyer stating that you recognize this style does not have flame retardant properties. Pure-Rest / Ecobaby's chemical-free latex crib mattress features a core of 4.5" or 5.5" extra firm (35 ILD) natural rubber. Covering the core is a layer of thin organic cotton fabric, a thick layer of organic cotton batting, a thick layer of organically processed wool from organically raised sheep, and a layer of premium European organic cotton fabric all quilted together to prevent shifting. This provides a strong, supportive mattress with an even top for safety. Pure-Rest even uses organic cotton quilted with wool on the sides to prevent moisture from reaching the foam inside.

This mattress exceeds U.S. and California flame retardancy guidelines without the addition of a single chemical! Organic Innerspring Mattresses

We generally don't recommend innerspring mattresses for adults due to pressure point discomfort and EMF concerns. Considering the amount of time we spend in bed, we believe purchasing a natural latex mattress is a sound investment in good health. Plus, since natural latex mattresses are more durable than innerspring mattresses, the long term cost of owning one is close to that of an innerspring. However, if budget absolutely prohibits you from purchasing a natural latex mattress at this time, we also carry Pure-Rest organic innerspring mattresses. Though not the optimal solution for health and comfort, these beds are a much healthier choice than any conventional mattress (non-organic innerspring or synthetic latex) you could buy.

For babies, pressure points and EMF issues are less of a problem since infants weigh less and are not as sensitive to pressure points as adults, and their mattress may not magnetize during the 1-2 years that they sleep in a crib. However, the chemicals that off-gas from conventional crib mattresses are highly toxic (see top right column) and we urge every parent to consider an organic innerspring crib mattress if they are unable to purchase one made of natural latex. We are so concerned about this issue that if you truly cannot afford an organic crib mattress, we will subsidize your purchase.
