Natural-fill Pillows Covered in Organic Cotton
Rejuvenating
rest begins at the top!
One of the most important keys to getting a good night's sleep
is choosing the right pillow. This is not always an easy selection
to make, but hopefully we can help...
- Your pillow must be the right height for your sleeping
position.
- Side sleepers need a relatively high, dense pillow to
support their head in a natural position.
- Back sleepers need a flatter pillow to keep the neck and
spine aligned properly.
- Those who sleep on their stomach need a very thin pillow.
NOTE: Sleeping on the stomach is not great for your neck
and spine...you might want to try changing to another position.
- People who switch positions during the night need a flat
pillow for the time on their back or stomach, and a thicker
pillow for the time on their side.
- Your pillow must be in good condition.
Many people get so attached to their pillow that they
do not realize it is worn out. To test your pillow fold it in
half, squeeze out the air, and let go. If it doesn't quickly
spring back open it's time for a new one.
- Your pillow must be made of the right materials.
Store-bought pillows are typically filled with polyester
or other synthetic fibers, synthetic rubber, or down and feathers
and covered with conventionally-grown cotton fabric or a cotton/poly
blend. Synthetic fillings and polyester fabrics are manufactured
from petrochemicals, which can offgas toxic and sensitivity-causing
fumes. Down/feather pillows harbor dust mites and cause allergic
reactions in many people. Our Pure-Rest pillows
are made in California and filled with natural and organic materials,
and are free of toxic chemicals. The organic cotton covers are
soft and easy to clean. These pillows are naturally resistant
to mites, mildew and water, and they feel great!

Natural/organic
shredded rubber pillow for people who switch sleeping positions
(and everyone else)
Many folks who change sleeping positions during the night choose
down/feather pillows because the thickness can be adjusted as
desired. But, as you might know, feather pillows have their problems:
1) they are not very comfortable when they matte down after the
first couple of months; 2) they often cause allergic reactions;
and 3) most down/feather pillows cannot be washed to keep dust
mites under control.
A 100% natural shredded rubber pillow is an exceptionally
healthy and wonderful alternative! The "cushy"
filling of this pillow can be arranged with a dip in the middle
for back sleeping and higher areas on the sides for mid-night
switches, which means no more pillow-punching at 2am! And the
woven cover pillow can be machine washed to keep it fresh and
free of unwanted critters. We love this pillow so much, we think
it's the perfect pillow for everyone!
- Zippered covers provide easy access to the filling so you
can remove some if the pillow is stuffed too full or add filling
if it later flattens a bit.
- Pure-Rest's zippered knit fabric is very soft and is thicker
than their woven cover, so it provides a softer sleeping surface,
but it should not be washed without removing the filling (a
messy process).
- Pure-Rest's woven shredded rubber pillows can be machine washed
on gentle cycle; but you might want to pin Suite Sleep's zippered
pillow closed to avoid a potential mess in the washer.
- Cotton is grown in the USA and Germany; rubber is grown in
South East Asia; pillow is sewn in the USA.
* Shredded latex is imported from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Thailand. |

Natural/organic
pillows for side sleepers (wool, kapok, molded rubber)
People who sleep on their side need a relatively high, dense
pillow to support their head in a natural, straight position.
Pure-Rest's 100% natural shredded rubber pillow (see above) is
a good option for side sleepers because it is stuffed quite full
and the stuffing can be removed to fine-tune the thickness to
your head and comfort. Other options for side sleepers are Pure-Rest's
medium-fill eco-wool, medium-fill kapok*, molded natural rubber
pillow; and Suite Sleep's zippered kapok pillow which can be easily
adjusted by adding or removing filling to create a loft that fits
the way you sleep. (additional kapok filling can be purchased
separately in case your sleeping pattern changes or it gets matted
down over time)
Note: Eco Wool pillows are filled with wool batting and tend
to matte down in a relatively short time. For a fluffier and more
resilient pillow, we recommend Woolie Ball
and Woolly Bolas pillows, shown below.
Pure-Rest's cotton cover fabric is made in Germany; wool is from
Northern California, Oregon, and Washington; rubber is grown in
South East Asia; pillows are sewn in the USA.
* Kapok is a silky, fluffy, resilient fiber from the seed pods
of the tropical Ceiba pentandra tree. These pillows can be machine
washed, but need to be completely dried in a dryer, then refluffed
by hand or with a stick. Kapok is imported from South America
or Southeast Asia. Heavy fill kapok pillows are also available.

Natural/organic
pillows for back sleepers (wool, kapok, contoured rubber)
Those who sleep on their back need a flatter pillow to keep the
neck and spine properly aligned. Pure-Rest's 100% natural shredded
rubber pillow is a good option for back sleepers because stuffing
can be removed to fine-tune the thickness (see above). Other options
for back sleepers are Pure-Rest's light-fill eco-wool or kapok*
pillows, or contoured natural rubber pillow (see list at right).
Also see Zippered Kapok in section above.

to matte down in a relatively short time. For a fluffier and more
resilient pillow, we recommend Woolie Ball

Organic
Woolie Ball / Woolly Bolas pillows
Pure-Rest's Woollie Ball and Suite Sleep's Woolly Bolas pillows
are amazing! Unlike pillows filled with wool batting, these pillows
are contain little woolen balls that resist the need to attach
to each other, which keeps your pillow fluffy over years of use.
The loose nature of the soft, balled-up wool also reduces pressure
on the ear of side-sleepers.
Light-fill and low pillows are appropriate for back sleepers.
Medium, heavy and high pillows work best for side sleepers and
those who switch positions in the middle of the night. All of
these pillow heights can be created with a zippered Woolly Bolas
pillow by adding or removing fill.
You can machine wash these pillows on the delicate cycle and
air-dry indoors, but try to wait till absolutely necessary because
washing removes the lanolin.
Pure-Rest's Woolie Ball pillows are made with Eco-wool and covered
in their fancy European organic cotton ticking from Germany; wool
is from Northern California, Oregon, and Washington; pillows are
sewn in the USA.
Suite Sleep's Woolly Bolas pillows are filled with wool grown
in the USA, and imported from New Zealand and Australia and Certified
Organic by Oregon Tilth. The zippered cover is made of 300 thread
count organic cotton sateen, unbleached and un-dyed, made in India
and sewn in the USA. Filling can be easily added or removed to
adjust the loft perfectly for the way you sleep. Additional filling
can be purchased separately in case your sleeping pattern changes
or it gets matted down over time. Fluff the pillow regularly to
prevent matting.

Heavy-fill organic pillows
Heavy fill pillows are enjoyed by large people and those who
prefer a thick pillow with high loft. Also see Zippered Woolly
Bolas pillow in section above.
Cotton cover fabric is made in Germany; wool is from Northern
California, Oregon, and Washington, pillows are sewn in the USA.
* Kapok is a silky, fluffy, resilient fiber from the seed pods
of the tropical Ceiba pentandra tree. These pillows can be machine
washed, but need to be completely dried in a dryer, then refluffed
by hand or with a stick.

Organic cotton pillows
We also carry organic cotton-filled pillows (vegan), but cotton
mattes down more than the other fillings so we don't usually recommend
them to our customers. Contact us for
