Committed to Sustainability

Not only does Shepherd’s Dream use only organic cotton and locally grown wool; but they are committed to taking every step possible to create a truly earth-friendly and sustainable company. They re-use boxes, buy 100% post-consumer-waste paper, cruise thrift stores before buying new office equipment, use every energy-efficient method and product they can find. They are living proof that a business can make green choices and still remain competitive with bigger businesses.

Why Wool Bedding?

Studies show that wool has a natural ability to maintain your body's optimal temperature, calm your nerves, and lower your heart rate. This encourages deeper sleep and reduces middle-of-the-night tossing and turning. Wool bed systems support your spine's natural alignment and help relieve painful pressure points. Wool has been said to relieve arthritis pain, rheumatism and back pain.

Wool regulates temperature and is remarkably comfortable in all seasons. In the winter it warms you without overheating or causing clamminess. Conversely, in warmer seasons, it helps to keep you cool by wicking moisture away from your skin. This capability makes wool the ideal fiber for bedding, as it helps your body maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the night, regardless of the season. Wool bedding is especially helpful for those who experience night-sweats or hot flashes, and is most effective when the entire bed is made of these naturally breathable fibers. Wool is resistant to dust-mites, mold and mildew.

Natural, Chemical Free, Sustainable

The Eco Wool used in Shepherd's Dream mattresses and toppers is entirely derived from sheep that are raised in Oregon following strict criteria to ensure top quality, chemical-free wool. Materials are processed in the USA without chemicals or flame retardents. Wool is naturally flame retardant because the protective lanolin coating on the fibers makes it naturally resistant to combustion, so wool bedding passes government-mandated flame tests without the addition of chemical flame retardants.

Product Care and Maintenance

Shepherd's Dream wool mattresses will compress about 10% during the first 6 months of use, so we recommend sleeping in different areas and rotating your mattress on a regular basis. With proper care, the mattress will last for several decades. And Shepherd's Dream will refurbish mattresses after 10, 20 or 30 years upon request. Snuggle Mate toppers should be removed from the bed to air out periodically. The toppers will compress about 30% over the first six months of use, so they should also be rotated on a regular basis.

Shipping

Shepherd's Dream mattresses and toppers are shipped by UPS Ground. The shipping cost for mattresses is included in the purchase prices shown below. Shipping for toppers is calculated at check-out. Mattresses and toppers are produced and shipped in one to four weeks. If you need a mattress quicker, rush orders are accepted for an additional 10% charge; or contact us about Suite Sleep's organic latex mattresses and toppers which can be shipped within a week.

What is Eco Wool?

The wool used in Shepherd's Dream products is Eco Wool. It is entirely derived from regional/domestic flocks of sheep that are raised following Woolgatherer Carding Mill's industry-leading sustainability and cruelty-free standards. All wool is purchased from the best farms in the country. The wool has a minimal amount of vegetable matter and is not treated with any harsh chemicals.

Proper Grazing Methods
Woolgatherer's Eco Wool comes from farms that do not overstock their pastures, and growers rotate sheep to different pastures to allow vegetation to recover from grazing. Overstocking and infrequent rotation produces soil erosion, more invasive plants and the need to bring in outside feed. Proper grazing techniques reduce soil erosion, create higher quality wool, and reduce the risk of sheep acquiring internal parasites.

Predator-Friendly
Growers are encouraged to use trained sheep dogs as well as include other larger animals—such as llamas—to protect their flock from predators, Predators play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems; therefore scaring them away from the sheep rather than trapping, poisoning, or shooting predators is a humane and ecologically sound practice.

Healthy Veterinary Practices
Generally, sheep raised in open pastures are of better health and require less veterinary care. Only certain kinds of medications and supplements can be used to treat Woolgatherer's sheep. Alternative caring methods to keep sheep healthy are encouraged, with the use of fewer chemicals.

Chemical Control
Woolgatherer prohibits the use of herbicides and pesticides on fields where the sheep will be grazing. They are able to determine if wool has been in contact with harmful chemicals during routine testing.

Breed, Color, Strength, Fiber Width
Eco Wool uses wool from six to eight different breeds of sheep. These blends are chosen to create strong, durable wool batting that retains its loft and resiliency longer. A mix of coarse and finer wools with varying crimps is used to achieve this special batting.

Organic Wool
Due to the low demand for organic lamb in the United States there is very little certified organic wool grown here, and most certified wool is imported from Europe and Asia. We believe Eco Wool, grown under tightly controlled conditions, is a healthy and environmentally superior option to certified organic wool.
