Natural / Organic Latex Mattresses

Is it really that important to sleep on a chemical-free mattress?

You may be surprised to learn that a wide array of hazardous industrial chemicals are found in most of today's mattresses, including benzene, toluene, phosphorus, formaldehyde, vinyl, pentaBDE, antimony, PVC, phthalates, pesticides, polyurethane and chlorine. These chemicals can cause a variety of health problems including insomnia; irritation of skin, eyes, throat and lungs; allergies and multiple chemical sensitivities; and some are known carcinogens.

Since many of these chemicals off-gas into the air and we sleep in such close proximity to our mattresses, we are exposed to these toxins for a significant period of time every day. The body stores many of these substances in fatty tissue, including the brain, where they are suspected of contributing to chronic brain disorders that are becoming epidemic in the older generation.

Many researchers also believe that environmental toxins, especially those found in today's weather-sealed homes, play a significant role in the increase in childhood disorders such as ADD/ADHD, autism, asthma and cancer. And the toxic gases given off by baby mattresses have been implicated in SIDS/crib death.

Do you think you can't afford an organic mattress?

Assuming a 15 year useful life, the cost for our adult mattresses ranges from 19 to 68 cents a day! We think that's an affordable price for healthy, chemical-free, restful sleep, don't you?

(and just think how much it costs to treat cancer, which is often caused by chronic exposure to toxic chemicals)

What is natural latex / rubber?

There is a lot of confusion about natural latex and rubber products. Unfortunately, just as in other industries like food and cosmetics, the term natural can be used to describe any product that contains natural ingredients. And since the word is not defined by law, some mattress companies call blends that contain a large percentage of synthetic latex "natural" because they contain some natural latex.

Is it latex or is it rubber?

Most people refer to rubber mattresses using the term latex. Technically, latex is the milky fluid produced by the cells of the rubber tree. It is treated using a process called vulcanization to create rubber. On our website we use these terms interchangeably.

The organic cotton knit fabric used in our mattress covers is certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), widely recognized as the world's premier processing standard for organic textiles. GOTS defines strict human and environmental safety and social standards for the entire textile supply chain and production process.

Mattress covers are made with a thick layer of GOTS certified organic New Zealand wool, making them ideal for those who suffer from feather, down, or synthetic bedding allergies. Wool is one of the safest bedding materials available today because it provides fire protection without the use of toxic flame retardants. Also, this pure New Zealand Wool is extra-soft and comfortable; and by trapping air within its fibers the wool provides temperature regulation to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. It's grown by ranchers who promote healthy ecosystems in their grazing pastures and abide by strict animal welfare rules to safeguard sheep wellbeing. The mattresses meet or exceed stringent California and Federal flame retardancy standards (flame tests) without the addition of chemical fire retardant chemicals. For persons with wool allergies or seeking an animal-free bed we also carry vegan mattresses; these have not been subjected to flame tests so a doctor's note is required for purchase.

organic latex mattressesORGANIC / NATURAL RUBBER
The natural and organic latex used in our mattresses is breathable and ventilated for maximum comfort. The correct firmness of latex will provide excellent support, while cushioning the body evenly to prevent the painful pressure points commonly found with innerspring mattresses. 100% natural latex is very resilient and naturally resistant to mold, mildew, bacteria and dust mites. Only air, natural soap and natural vulcanization (curing) agents are used in processing the latex after it's tapped from the Hevea Brasiliensis rubber tree, which grows on plantations in Southeast Asia. Unlike synthetic rubber made from petroleum and steel made from scarce raw materials, 100% natural rubber is a renewable resource and there are no toxic substances or ozone-depleting agents used in its production. Our mattresses are available with USDA / GOLS certified organic Arpico Dunlop latex, or OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified natural Dunlop latex. Natural latex mattresses are ideal for people who:

  • are sensitive or allergic to chemicals, mold, mildew, bacteria or petroleum-based products and other synthetic materials;
  • have back and/or joint problems or want to avoid these problems;
  • are concerned about EMFs (some believe that innerspring mattresses can magnetize over time and create or conduct EMFs);
  • don't want to wake up when their partner moves;
  • are health-conscious and want to reduce their exposure to environmental toxins;
  • or simply want to get a great night's sleep!

Organic Latex Mattresses

We LOVE our new mattress and bed. We're sleeping like babies, and with the assurance that we're not breathing in any toxic chemicals. The bed frame is beautiful quality and the slight natural wood scent in our bedroom is wonderful! Thank you for recommending this combination to us.
Michaela K , Walnut Creek, CA

Our latex mattresses are made with pure OEKO-TEX certified natural or GOLS certified organic Dunlop rubber cores, covered with USDA certified organic cotton knit fabric quilted to GOTS certified organic wool. The thick layer of wool in the top cover (3 ounces per square foot) makes our beds feel more luxurious than those made with less wool batting, plus the wool provides natural flame resistance and temperature regulation. The wool and latex conform to your body's shape and minimize pressure on your joints and back. The zippered mattress cover allows you to stack the layers of rubber in a different order to customize the firmness. And should a layer need to be replaced for some reason it can be changed-out for much less expense than buying a whole new mattress.

Below are the ILD ratings for the Dunlop latex we offer. Keep in mind that different manufacturers may name their latex differently, but the firmness should feel similar if it's a similar ILD. When purchasing a mattress you can choose the firmness of each layer, and for queen and king sizes you can choose different firmness on each side if one sleeper prefers the bed firmer than the other. Feel free to contact us if you need help choosing the height or firmness!

  • Soft (19-21 ILD) is typically recommended for your top mattress layer, especially if you sleep on your side.
  • Medium (24-26 ILD) or Medium-Firm (29-31 ILD) is often used for the middle layer(s).
  • Firm (34-36 ILD) is recommended for the bottom layer, and can be used in higher layers if you prefer a firmer feel or weigh over 300 lb.
  • Latex is grown and processed in Southeast Asia; cotton is grown in the USA; wool is from New Zealand; mattresses are sewn and assembled in Southern California.
  • Suggested support: solid wood platform bed from Pacific Rim, Dapwood, or Bedworks of Maine, or wood-slat foundation, or roll of wood slats.

7-inch Organic Latex Mattress

The Organic and Healthy 7" latex mattress has three 2-inch rubber layers inside. This mattress works well for children and light- to average-weight adults who sleep mostly on their back. Choosing different firmnesses for the three layers allows you to customize the feel to your preference, unlike most latex mattresses of this thickness which are made with just one or two layers of rubber.

Please note that California, Connecticut and Rhode Island have instituted a mattress recycling program, and we are required to collect a recycling fee when we ship a mattress or foundation into these states. The current fee for California is $11 per item; Connecticut's fee is $9 each; and Rhode Island's is $10. This fee will be added to your purchase when you check out. We just received our mattresses and wool pads and I had to write to thank you for all of your help. The kids and I were so excited that we immediately opened one and managed to lift it up to my daughter's loft bed. That night she and her father slept on it, even though I had not yet put on the cotton cover or the sheets. This morning we finally unrolled the other mattress and dressed both mattresses with their cotton covers, wool pads (nice and thick!) and sheets. Such luxurious materials; and the firm is perfect support for us. It is such a relief to know that the kids will sleep chemical-free for many years to come! I can already tell that my husband and I will also one day switch to a natural latex bed.

Supporting Your Latex Mattress
For proper ventilation and support, your natural latex mattress must be used on a slatted wood surface with 1.5 to 3 inches between the slats. To eliminate the need for a foundation, the mattress may be placed directly on a natural wood platform bed, like those from Pacific Rim, Dapwood, or Bedworks of Maine. For the budget-minded, we also offer a roll of wood slats that might work on your existing bed frame depending on how it's constructed. Feel free to contact us if you have questions about how to support your new mattress.

Lead Time and Shipping
Most mattresses are shipped within a week of order from the factory in Southern California with FREE FedEx GROUND SHIPPING to the continental USA. To ship elsewhere please put the mattress in your shopping cart using the "buy now" button, enter your shipping information, and we will reply with a shipping quote within one business day.

Size
The dimensions shown on this page are standard sizes. Because these mattresses are hand-made, finished dimensions may vary up to one inch.

Warranties
Your all-natural latex mattress will be warrantied by the manufacturer to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of 20 years (10 fixed, 10 prorated). It is constructed with the finest materials, and designed to conform to a person's individual shape which may result in "body contouring". This is normal and not a structural defect, but severe contours over 1.5 inches in depth below the normal surface of the product are covered by the manufacturer's Limited Warranty. In addition, we offer a 90-day comfort exchange for one layer; you just pay for shipping. Note that the natural materials used in these mattresses might have a slight odor which should blow-off over time. As this is a natural product, we do not warrant for any smells or odors. If you are very sensitive you can contact us to order a mattress test kit prior to purchase.

Eco-Conscious Ways to Dispose of Your Old Mattress
Consider offering your old mattress free on Craig’s List. Usually there is someone out there who needs a mattress and they will come and pick it up! Or contact a recycler: http://byebyemattress.com/recycling-locator-2/ or http://search.earth911.com/?what=Mattresses For more ideas, see: http://www.nrdc.org/thisgreenlife/1008.asp Please do not send it to the landfill, if at all possible.
