Rejuvenating rest begins at the top!

One of the most important keys to getting a good night's sleep is choosing the right pillow. This is not always an easy selection to make, but hopefully we can help...

Your pillow must be the right height for your sleeping position.
• Side sleepers need a relatively high, dense pillow to keep their head and spine aligned in a straight, natural position.
• Back sleepers need a flatter pillow to keep the neck and spine aligned properly.
• Those who sleep on their stomach need a very thin pillow.
• People who switch positions during the night need a flat pillow while sleeping on their back or stomach, and a thicker pillow for the time on their side.
• Our adjustable pillows are ideal for all of these folks!

Your pillow must be in good condition.
Many people get so attached to their pillow that they don't realize it's worn out and not providing the comfort and support they need. To test your pillow fold it in half, squeeze out the air, and let go. If it doesn't quickly spring back open it's time for a new one.

“We love the pillows and sheets we bought for our Airstream last summer so much that we're now swapping out our sheets and pillows on our bed at home!”   Kristen J, Santa Clarita, CA

Your pillow must be made of the right materials.
Store-bought pillows are typically filled with polyester or other synthetic fibers, synthetic rubber, or down and feathers and covered with conventionally grown (heavily pesticided) cotton fabric or a cotton/poly blend. Synthetic fillings and polyester fabrics are manufactured from petrochemicals which can offgas toxic and sensitivity-causing fumes. Down and feather pillows harbor dust mites and cause allergic reactions in many people, plus the process used to harvest down is often cruel (see info about down). Our pillow covers are made of GOTS / USDA certified organic cotton and filled with organic/ natural plant-based materials...no synthetics! Organic bedding has no formaldehyde finishes applied, no pesticide residue, no toxic flame-retardants, and no dioxins from bleaching. And because organic agriculture doesn't use toxic, persistent pesticides, choosing organic is an easy way to help protect the earth for generations to come.

pocket for zipper pull on pillow coverAll of our organic pillows contain loose filling (wooly balls, latex or kapok) that can be customized to your height and firmness preference by adding or removing some from the zippered cover. At bedtime the filling can be arranged with a dip in the middle for back sleeping and higher areas on the sides for mid-night switches, which means those who change sleeping positions during the night no longer have to pillow-punch at 2am! Additional filling can be purchased separately if your sleeping pattern changes or the filling gets matted down over time. And the organic cotton sateen covers can be machine washed to keep them clean and free of unwanted critters. To eliminate the chance of the zipper coming open on its own and to silence the jingle of the zipper pull it's been hidden inside a pocket at the top of the zipper. However, washing the pillow with the filling inside is not recommended because it would make quite a mess in your washer if the zipper came open, but some customers secure the zipper with safety pins or enclose the pillow in a laundry bag and wash the whole thing!

Soaring Heart Organic Wool Bolus pillowOrganic / Natural woolly bolus pillows

Wool bolus pillows are amazing! Unlike pillows filled with wool batting, these contain little woolen balls that don't clump together, which keeps your pillow fluffy over years of use. The loose nature of the soft, balled-up wool reduces pressure on the ear of side-sleepers. It is also temperature-regulating and incredibly malleable, forming to the shape of your head and allowing you to scrunch and shape it. The pillow is stuffed very full so you can remove some wooly balls and save them for later in case your sleeping position changes or if it flattens out a bit over time.

The pea-sized pellets of wool are pre-felted, which means you can wash the whole pillow (cold/gentle cycle), not just the pillowcase as with other wool pillows, though you will want to pin the zipper closed or enclose the pillow in a laundry bag to prevent the zipper from opening in your washer. Every few washes you can use a wool detergent to put the lanolin back in to maintain its beneficial properties. Tumble dry on low with dryer balls to break up the wool and bring back its original loft. If line-dried, place in a cool dryer with dryer balls to fluff up the wool filling. The woolie ball pillow from Pure-Rest was always one of our customers' favorites!

organic pillow kapokNatural kapok pillows

Just like the shredded rubber and woolie ball pillows, our zippered kapok pillow arrives very full and can be easily adjusted by adding or removing filling to create a loft that fits the way you sleep. Kapok is a silky, fluffy, resilient fiber from the seed pods of the tropical Ceiba pentandra tree (silk cotton tree) that grows easily without fertilizer or pesticides in South America and Southeast Asia. It will not mold or mildew, just like all of our pillow fills. Kapok carries the most fluffing ability and feels like a feather pillow if you don't stuff it too full. The light, airy fiber will not lose its loft as it is slept on. And overstuffed kapok makes a solid, firm pillow.

The kapok silk is luxurious to the touch and provides medium-firm support. Despite the softness of the fibers they will break into smaller pieces over time due to their inherent fragility. This breakage compresses the fibers, and in time the pillow will reveal its true firmness. We include at least a pound of extra fiber in your new pillow so you have fill ready to add more if you want it to recover its loft, so when you receive it you will probably want to remove some of that extra filling. Because they are so dense, drying a kapok pillow outside would take days or weeks, so it's best to run it through multiple cycles in your your dryer to get the fiber is dry throughout. Or remove the filling and just wash the organic cotton cover.
