Truly Organic Materials
Soaring Heart uses all organic materials that are grown responsibly. All of their cotton and wool is grown in the United States by people who are passionate about providing a quality product. Every farm, carding mill, cotton gin, and latex plant has been vetted and scrutinized. They have a personal relationship with each supplier and can attest to their commitment to organic processing, excellent craftsmanship, and environmental stewardship.

Transparency Ethic
Unlike many brands that have made purchasing an organic mattress confusing with ambiguous certifications and green-washing, Soaring Heart affirms an ethic of transparency. They state exactly what is in their products and exactly what is not. In fact, they were one of only two companies recognized for full disclosure in The Mattress Matters, a 2011 report by Clean and Healthy New York.

Old-Fashioned Craftsmanship
Soaring Heart takes the time to ensure your mattress is made right and built to the highest standards in comfort and craftsmanship. Each stitch of their organic mattresses, futons, shikibutons, and bedding is handcrafed. They believe that the simplest way to make a beautiful mattress is by using time-tested construction techniques and only the finest organic materials.

Experience the Soaring Heart difference for yourself!

Soaring Heart Organic Futons, Mattresses, Shikibutons, Toppers, Mattress Pads, Bedrolls

Organic futons mattresses shikibutonsA mattress that properly supports your neck and spine, relieves pressure points, and reduces tension in the muscles and joints greatly improves your quality of life. And one that is crafted with superior, healthful, organic materials and no chemicals or fire retardants can protect and improve your overall health.

Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company's organic mattresses, futons, shikibutons and bedding are made from materials that offer intrinsic health benefits such as thermal regulation, dust mite resistance and pain relief. The company's philosophy is "better health through sleep" and they consistently set the bar high on what a quality mattress can offer. Conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, and chronic pain can be positively affected by sleeping on a better mattress. People suffering from allergies, multiple chemical sensitivities, and other auto-immune problems may also find comfort in organic products because they are free of synthetic materials as well as chemicals.

CHEMICAL-FREE FLAME RESISTANCE

The Federal Government's Regulation 16 C.F.R. 1632 requires mattresses made and sold in the U.S. to pass a test in which cigarettes are thrown onto the mattress surface, and the mattress can only smolder to a one inch radius from the origin. In 2007, the federal government made these regulations stricter, with C.F.R. 1633. To meet these new requirements the mattress must be sent to a third-party burn facility and withstand 70 seconds of open flame emitted from a blow torch that sits about a foot away. In order to purchase a mattress that does NOT pass this flame test, the customer must have a prescription from a medical professional stating that the patient cannot sleep on the flame-resistant materials used in the mattress. But nowhere does the law state that fire retardant chemicals must be used to pass these tests, and the mattresses we carry pass both tests by using wool...absolutely no synthetic materials or chemical flame retardants are added! Note that all-cotton futons and shikibutons require a doctor's note stating that the purchaser has a sensitivity to flame retardants or wool, and a note stating that you recognize this style does not have flame retardant properties.

COMFORTABLE, HEALTHY ORGANIC WOOL

The lofty softness of organic wool batting creates a supple cushion for heavier parts of the body, such as shoulders and hips; and its natural resilience gently supports the curves in our backs and sides. In addition, wool acts as a thermal regulator by surrounding you with a layer of body-temperature air, which keeps you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Wool possesses other therapeutic properties as well, and often makes sleep possible for people with arthritis because it keeps joints from heating up, while at the same time supporting the body. Many people who suffer from fibromyalgia sleep better on wool because it reduces pain from pressure points. Some studies have even shown that premature babies thrive better in incubators lined with wool. It also helps reduce dust mites, which are the biggest source of airborne allergies in this country...since wool disperses moisture so quickly, dust mites can't thrive in its low humidity. And because it stays so dry, wool also resists mold and mildew; so wool can offer some major benefits for people with allergies. All of these factors make wool an excellent material to include in the top layer of a mattress. The wool used by Soaring Heart is grown by small ranchers in Oregon and Washington and is Oregon Tilth and USDA certified.

Allergic to wool? Did you know that most people who think they're allergic to wool, actually aren't? Most perceived wool allergies are contact irritation from the texture of the wool fibers rubbing against the skin. Actual wool allergies are rare and usually due to a reaction to the lanolin. When wool is contained inside cotton cases no skin contact ever takes place, so the sensitivity is not triggered.

Soaring Heart Organic FutonsORGANIC COTTON

Soaring Heart makes all of their organic mattresses, futons, shikibutons, and bedding using only 100% USDA-certified organic non-GMO cotton. It is grown in the USA without pesticides and is completely chemical free and hypoallergenic. Because there are no chemicals used in growing the cotton or producing the fabric and batting, none end up on or in your body, thus helping to reduce risks of asthma, skin irritation, allergies and chemical sensitivities. Also, since conventional cotton is the most heavily pesticided agricultural crop in the world, buying organic cotton is an environmentally responsible decision. Soaring Heart's cotton batting is grown by farmers in the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Coop (TOCMC). Their fabrics come from certified organic cotton suppliers around the world.

Organic latexORGANIC LATEX

In addition to being amazingly supportive and completely botanical, organic latex is hypoallergenic, dust mite resistant, and mold and mildew resistant. As a result, many of the most common allergens in the home and bedroom are reduced or eliminated when sleeping on organic latex, giving allergy sufferers a comfortable place to rest. Mold and mildew spores can also have an impact on the health of people who are not allergic, and this impact can be severe. Reducing your risk of mold and mildew is a very important step to making your home more healthy. Since organic latex contains no synthetic materials, chemicals, or fire retardants it does not outgas VOCs, which makes it safe for children and adults alike. Unlike many foam mattresses that are made with petroleum products, organic latex doesn't need to be aired-out or off-gassed.

Latex offers unparalleled support. It contours to the curves of the unique shape of each individual and provides a luxurious night's sleep. Latex cradles the body in a neutral position, which keeps neck, shoulder, spine, and hips in proper alignment. This reduces stress and strain on joints, and leads to a deep and relaxing rest and a morning free of aches and pains. And studies have shown that natural latex relieves 30% more pressure than memory foam. Soaring Heart's GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified Dunlap latex is grown in Sri Lanka.

Allergic to latex? For those suffering latex allergies (only about 1 to 6 percent of the general public) it's important to realize that most problems are contact allergies caused by synthetic latex. For people who are allergic to natural latex, note that the organic latex used in our mattresses is made using processes that eliminate a significant portion of the proteins associated with allergies. Plus, the latex cores are surrounded by many layers of wool and cotton, so direct skin contact never occurs.

SAMPLE KITS

Natural materials often have a slight scent. There are no odor-neutralizing chemicals or cover-up perfumes added to any of our products, but the natural scents will dissipate over time. If you are highly sensitive we recommend contacting us to request a sample kit which contains small, individually sealed pieces of just about every material used in Soaring Heart products. To test the materials it is recommended to either sleep with the material in question inside your pillowcase overnight, or seal the sample in a jar overnight and cautiously smell the air inside the jar in the morning. See how you react to each material. If you have no reactions chances are good that a bed built with that material will be just fine for you to sleep on. If you already know you're violently allergic to any of these materials please be cautious when considering exposing yourself to them.

If you need a different mattress thickness or configuration please see our Pure-Rest page.

ECO-CONSCIOUS WAYS TO DISPOSE OF YOUR OLD MATTRESS

Consider offering your old mattress for free on Craig’s List. Usually there is someone out there who needs a mattress and they will come and pick it up! Or contact a recycler: http://byebyemattress.com/recycling-locator-2/ or http://search.earth911.com/?what=Mattresses For more ideas, see: http://www.nrdc.org/thisgreenlife/1008.asp Please do not send it to the landfill, if at all possible.

IMPORTANT NOTE: California, Connecticut and Rhode Island have instituted a mattress recycling program, and we are required to collect a recycling fee when we ship a mattress or foundation into these states. The current fee for California is $11 per item; Connecticut's fee is $9 each; and Rhode Island's is $10. This fee will be added to your purchase when you check out. Organic cotton wool futonOrganic Cotton Futon or Cotton & Wool Futon

Inside Soaring Heart's classic organic cotton futon is American grown, long-fiber organic cotton that has been cross-layered and hand-tufted to provide long lasting comfort. This futon makes the perfect mattress for those who enjoy a firm feel. Note that all-cotton futons require a doctor's note stating that the purchaser has a sensitivity to flame retardants or wool, and a note stating that you recognize this style does not have flame retardant properties.

In their organic cotton and wool futon, premium organic wool, a blend gathered from eight different sheep breeds grown on small farms along the Oregon and California coasts, creates a protective barrier around the organic cotton core, which gives you a longer lasting mattress that is supremely comfortable.

Organic cotton latex wool futon Organic Cotton, Latex & Wool (optional) Futon

Want the most luxurious organic futon out there? Soaring Heart's organic cotton, latex and wool futon layers organic cotton and premium organic wool around a 100% organic Dunlop latex core (firm, 32 to 37 ILD). The latex core gives this futon unprecedented comfort and contouring in a futon-style mattress, and is hand-tufted for superior longevity. This is the ideal mattresses for those who prefer a soft, yet supportive bed. These futons work great in a sofa set-up because the latex core reduces creasing where the futon folds. Also available without wool (vegan).

I can sleep well on any bed the first night. It is after the second and third night the flaws of the mattress are revealed by a aching body parts. So after the first night sleeping on this mattress (cotton/latex/wool futon) it was no surprise that I slept well.  Being that it is a futon mattress, I had strong doubts about the forthcoming nights. Upon awakening the second morning I felt great and found myself reluctant to leave the bed. No sore spots to report and after the third morning with no problems I was completely sold. The mattress provided solid support while simultaneously giving enough cushion to prevent any sore areas. Jason B, Salt Lake City, UT

Soaring Heart Organic Shikibutons

organic shikibutonContemporary. Efficient. Minimalist. Soaring Heart's Organic Shikibutons, handcrafted in the traditional Japanese style established many centuries ago, are compact enough for tight spaces and perfect for people who love a firm, supportive mattress. Surprisingly lightweight and approximately 4 inches thick, shikibutons are easily folded or rolled, and stored to make better use of your space or to be instantly available for overnight guests. If you want to keep the versatility of the shikibuton but want a softer sleep experience, try layering two or more shikibutons on top of each other. For this purpose, Soaring Heart recommends topping an Organic Latex Shikibuton with an Organic Cotton & Wool Shikibuton and an Organic Latex Topper.

Organic shikibutons work best when used with a Tatami frame and mat, which emulates the traditional tatami mat flooring used in Japan. Preferable to placing it on the floor or bed slats, a tatami mat allows the shikibuton to rest on a flat, solid surface while still being able to breathe properly. Your shikibuton should last you eight to ten years with proper ventilation and maintenance, although some customers are still comfortably using Soaring Heart shikibutons purchased fifteen years ago. Shikibutons can be reworked by Soaring Heart if needed. Can be used with a Soaring Heart organic shikibuton cover. Must be covered with our felted wool, cotton flannel or cotton quilted mattress pad for warranty coverage and rework.

Each organic cotton shikibuton is made by hand in Soaring Heart's Seattle workshop out of layers of long-fiber organic cotton sustainably grown in the United States. These layers of supportive cotton are hand tufted inside an organic cotton fabric case to insure superior resilience and enduring comfort. Soaring Heart Organic Mattress Toppers

organic mattress toppersSoaring Heart's mattress toppers work wonderfully on Soaring Heart's futons, mattresses and shikibutons, or on any standard-size mattress. A topper can make an old bed feel like new again, and it can reduce the inhilation of VOCs that off-gas from conventional mattresses. Place the topper directly on the mattress, then cover with a mattress pad and sheets to protect it and keep it securely in place. While toppers will naturally conform to your body contours over time, with proper care, including flipping every week or two, your new topper should last five to ten years. The support layer features organic Dunlop rubber surrounded by thermo-insulating organic wool, and the sides are covered with an elegant organic herringbone fabric. The latex is available firm (32 to 37 ILD) and extra firm (43 to 45 ILD). Most customers say they feel the most comfortable on the firm rubber. The extra-firm latex tends to feel best to people who are accustomed to sleeping on a firm cotton futon, those who sleep mostly on their backs, and to tall, thin folks whose long limbs feel better when their bed has less give. This support can also be combined with a 2" wool topper (Tamarack mattress) or 4" wool topper (Linden mattress).

Soaring Heart Organic Mattress Pads

organic cotton mattress padDid you know that your body loses about a pint of moisture every night? Some of that is released in breath, but most of it is sweat and body oils, which sink right down into your mattress. By using a mattress pad you keep your mattress clean, preserve the materials and craftsmanship, and potentially double its lifespan. Soaring Heart thinks using an all natural or organic mattress pad is so important that their mattress and futon warranty is contingent upon you owning and using one!

Why organic? Simple...synthetic materials reflect body heat and raise your body temperature, which makes you sweat more. This makes sleeping uncomfortable and can leave a clammy feeling in the morning.

• No chemicals, synthetic ingredients or chemical fire retardants.
• Hand-crafted of the finest materials in Seattle, Washington. Shipped from Seattle by FedEx.

Soaring Heart Comfort Guarantee, Returns, Warranties, Rebuilds

Mattress Comfort Guarantee

Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company's 30-Day Comfort Guarantee is a mattress exchange program, not a return policy. You have 30 days from the date of delivery to have your mattress modified into a more suitable sleep system of equivalent or lesser value. Modifying your sleep system above the value of the original purchase will incur additional costs for materials. The 30-Day Comfort Guarantee is contingent upon the use of a qualified mattress pad (Soaring Heart's felted wool or cotton flannel pad; or Pure-Rest's cotton quilted pad) to protect the mattress. Any stains or damage to the mattress will void the 30-Day Comfort Guarantee. Fees will apply for any additional materials or restocking. This guarantee does not apply to discounted products, items sold "as is", or custom products.

Returns

• Soaring Heart cannot accept returns on bedding unless damaged or defective.
• Returned products are subject to a 30% restocking fee.
• Customer is responsible for shipping charges on all returned items.

Product Warranties

All Soaring Heart products are warranted against defective materials and workmanship. If your item is found to have defective material and/or workmanship Soaring Heart will rebuild or replace your product (at their discretion) free of charge, according to the coverage period below. Note that failure to follow care instructions will void the guarantee and any subsequent warranty. To qualify for warranty and rebuilds, the original purchaser must be using a qualified Mattress Pad (Soaring Heart's felted wool or cotton flannel pad; or Pure-Rest's cotton quilted pad), present proof of purchase for validation, and the law label and trade labels on the defective product must be intact.

Mattress pads: two (2) years.

Futons, shikibutons, toppers and other items: five (5) years.

Mattresses: twenty (20) years: fixed for years 1-10; prorated for years 11-20. This warranty extends only to the original purchaser. Should your mattress fail during the warranty period, Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company will, at its option, replace or repair the mattress or foundation at no charge other than transportation costs. Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company reserves the right to substitute materials or models of equal value and quality. Repair or replacement of the mattress does not extend the original warranty period. To qualify for this warranty, the original purchaser must be using a qualified mattress pad (Soaring Heart's felted wool or cotton flannel pad; or Pure-Rest's cotton quilted pad), present proof of purchase for validation, and the law label and trade labels on the defective product must be intact. The mattress set must also be free of stains, soiling and tears. Please note that if you plan to use your Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company mattress on a slat foundation, the slats must be at least 2" apart to validate the warranty. This distance provides optimal air-flow and support of the mattress.

These warranties do not apply to:
• Normal body signatures of 1½" deep or less.
• Firmness preference.
• Allergies or sensitivities.
• Cover (fabric).
• Stains or soil.
• Burns.
• Floor models or products sold "as is."
• Incidental or consequential damages arising through the use of these products.
• Loose threads, pilling, normal body contouring, and stretching of fabrics are considered cosmetic flaws and are not covered.

Rebuilds

Soaring Heart mattresses, futons, shikibutons and toppers may be rebuilt if a qualified mattress pad (Soaring Heart's felted wool or cotton flannel pad; or Pure-Rest's cotton quilted pad) has been used. Rebuilds of defective products or those under warranty are free, however the cost of materials may be charged. For products not under warranty a labor charge of $60/hour plus material costs will be applied. All product rebuilds covered under warranty or otherwise are subject to inspection. Toppers and futons have an expected life of approximately ten (10) years before needing rebuilding if cared for properly (see care instructions).
